The Review

Introduction

The Review was an irregularly published literary magazine based first in Oxford then in London, England. Ian Hamilton was the editor, starting the magazine in 1962 and heading it until it ceased publication in 1972. This collection contains material relating to The Review from 1962-1970.

Physical property rights in the collection were transferred to Northern Illinois University Libraries. All other literary rights and copyrights remain with the creators of the materials or their designated heirs. The materials in this collection are available for research to qualified scholars as determined by the Northern Illinois University Libraries without restrictions. Reproduction of materials is available at the discretion of RBSC staff. All materials reproduced from this collection should bear the credit line, "The Review Collection, Rare Books and Special Collections, Northern Illinois University.” In general, Rare Books and Special Collections is not the copyright holder for its materials. It is the responsibility of the patron to adhere to all applicable copyright law when seeking permission to publish.

Scope and Content

This collection contains corrected typescripts of poetry, essays, book reviews, and interviews published in and galley proofs of The Review from 1962-1970 (with the exception of issues 10, 13, 14, and 21). Printed copies of the first twenty issues are in the collection, as are paste-up copies of fourteen issues. Also included are correspondence between editors and contributors, items submitted but not published, letters from writers about the Vietnam War for a special issue of The Review, correspondence regarding possible legal action against Ian Hamilton for an article published, as well as printed form letters for subscribers to the magazine.

The collection is arranged in three series: 1. Corrected typescripts of published materials. 2. Printed issues, 1-24. 3. Correspondence and unused submissions. Series 1 is arranged chronologically, and within each folder arranged according to the table of contents of each magazine. The folders are numbered according to the issues. There are no folders 10, 13, 14, or 21 as there are no typescript materials relating to these issues in the collection. Series 2 is arranged chronologically. Series 3 is arranged alphabetically by creator. All folders are numbered sequentially within their respective series, regardless of box location. Series 1 includes boxes 1-3; Box 1 includes materials from issues 1-15, Box 2 includes materials from issues 16-22 (including a folder of letters from writers about the Vietnam War), and Box 3 contains materials from issues 23-25. Series 2 includes boxes 4-5; Box 4 contains the printed and paste-up copies of issues 1-13, and Box 5 contains the printed and paste-up copies of issues 14-24. Series 3 includes Boxes 6-7, which contain primarily letters and unused submissions.

Historical Sketch

Editor Ian Hamilton’s intention was to provide a showcase for contemporary poetry as well as reviews of collections of poetry, interviews with featured poets, and poetry criticism. Though pre-dominantly featuring British writers, there are also contributions from American and translations of European poets, including an issue with some Chinese poetry. Contributors to the magazine were both satirical and serious, ranging from poems mocking popular contemporary poems to critical essays and informative interviews.
