In the fall of 1995 Northern Illinois University opened a large off-campus education center to serve Rockford residents who in the past had enrolled in university classes at numerous locations scattered around the city. The library was designed to provide electronic access to the major databases, indexes, abstracts, and full-text services that are available to students at the main library in DeKalb. In addition to a small collection of reference books and various electronic databases, the library provides access to I-Share (online catalog), the FirstSearch, and the Internet. Students are able to identify resource materials necessary to complete class assignments or research projects, and rapid document deliveries from the DeKalb library to Rockford ensure that books, audiovisuals, periodicals, and other materials are available to meet student needs. Library staff members are available to assist patrons during NIU-Rockford Library service hours.
