Northern Illinois University’s United Nations collection of records, documents and sales publications is kept in the Government Publications Department on the second floor of Founders Memorial Library. The collection is arranged by the United Nations’ call number system, which is based on the principle of provenance or issuing agency (in the same way that United States publications are identified and arranged by the Superintendent of Documents classification scheme). The most prolific issuing agencies of the U.N. and their initial call number letters are: General Assembly: A; Economic and Social Council: E; International Court of Justice: ICJ; Security Council: S; the U.N. Secretariat: ST; Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific: ST ESCAP; and United Nations Conference on Trade and Development: UNCTAD.

The following list is an alphanumeric ordering of all these call numbers, with either a title or a brief description for the publication or series. Often an annotation or a “see-also reference” is included.

The roster of member nations, the Charter, and the structure of the United Nations are all found in the appendixes of the Yearbook of the United Nations and on the U.N. website at <http://www.un.org/>.
