The Friends of NIU Libraries was founded in 1983 as an association of library
supporters interested in contributing to the development of the resources of
the University Libraries (view by-laws ). Currently,
we have nearly 200 members.
The Friends secure gifts and bequests and provide funds for the purchase of books, manuscripts, and other materials such as electronic resources that could not otherwise be acquired by the library, through member contributions, the Library Endowment Fund, the Ensuring the Future Tree, the Library Book Fund, and sponsorship of memorial and endowment programs. The Friends sponsor a series of programs each year on a wide range of topics, often related to books, libraries, and publishing, but also of general interest. These programs are free and open to the public. A listing of upcoming programs for this year can be found on our Activities & Programs page. If you would like to be part of an e-mail distribution list for announcements of upcoming Friends events, please email us at libraryfriend@niu.edu. Suggestions for future Friends programming can be sent to the same address.
The Friends also sponsor an ongoing book sale in the lobby of Founders' Memorial Library to raise funds for the library. Donations to the book sale are always accepted, and the stock turns over regularly.
There are many benefits to membership in the Friends, including access to selected online databases provided by the Library, and longer checkout times for books. NIU Faculty and Staff can have their membership dues deducted directly via payroll deduction by filling out this form and returning it with their membership form. We'll do the rest!
Gifts to the University Libraries can also be made by credit card using this online form through the NIU Foundation, and checking "University Libraries" as your gift designee, or, you can designate "other," and specify the Friends of the NIU Libraries on the form.

Student - $10
Individual - $35
Family - $50
Donor - $100
Benefactor/Corporate - $500
