- Social Studies Sources - A detailed web page operating out of Indiana University. Curriculum features notable here are sections on cultural diversity, global/international studies, classroom-based Internet projects and "WWW Professional Development for Teachers," the last containing lesson plans which integrate web sites.
- Special Education Resources on the Internet - Based at Hood College in Frederick, Maryland, this site offers 22 divisions of special education information. Researchers will find general classes of disabilities (such as learning impairment and behavior disorders) rather than links to specific conditions, with the exceptions of autism and attention deficit disorders.
- The Library of Congress National Library Service for the Blind and Physically Handicapped - The Library of Congress administers a free library program that circulates Braille and recorded materials to eligible borrowers through a network of cooperating regional and subregional (local) libraries. Reading materials and playback machines are sent to borrowers and returned to libraries by postage-free mail.

- Alternative Education Resource Organization
- American Association of People with Disabilities - AAPD is a nonprofit, cross-disability, advocacy-centered organization that focuses on issues of economic circumstances, productivity, independence, full citizenship, and total integration into all aspects of society.
- American Association of School Administrators - Founded in 1865, the AASA is the professional forum for elementary and secondary educators interested in improving schools for the 21st century, expanding the school-community connection, and enhancing the effectiveness and quality of school leaders. "Front Burner Issues" provides a quick way to track important debates and controversies.
- American Association on Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities - The oldest (since 1876) and largest worldwide interdisciplinary organization of professionals and laypersons concerned about mental retardation and related disabilities. Focus issues are policies promoting global research, and universal human rights for persons with disabilities. Tables of contents for all Association periodicals are included.
- American Council of the Blind - Founded in 1961, the Council is America's leading membership organization of blind and visually-impaired people. The site includes all issues of the publication The Braille Forum from 1990 to date, and "Washington Connection" which provides updates on legislative action relevant to the populations served by the Council.

- Disabled People's International - The purpose of Disabled People's International (DPI) is to promote the human rights of people with disabilities through full participation, equalization of opportunity, and development.
- Education Alliance for Equity and Excellence in the Nation's Schools - Based at Brown University, this group believes "that language, culture, and diversity are fundamental to the success of educational reform," and promotes research, training, and curriculum design within an inclusionary framework. Most of the links are to organizations in New England.
- Epilepsy Foundation of America - Since its formation in 1968, this organization has worked as an advocate for epileptics, in addition to coordinating the work of sixty affiliated foundations and sponsoring research. This site offers budgets on current projects, a sample of the publication Epilepsy SA, and an archive of press releases, besides basic facts and figures on epilepsy.
- Illinois Association of School Boards - Created in 1913, this non-profit organization has as members over 90 percent of the active school boards in Illinois. Features of the site include the 1998 Illinois School Code online and tracking of education-related bills pending before the Illinois General Assembly.

- International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement - Taking "the world as an educational laboratory" the IEA provides comparative educational research and has done so since the late 1950s. Topics of continuing interest are mathematics and science education, reading literacy, and computer applications.

- LDA: Learning Disabilities Association of America - This organization is devoted to defining and finding solutions to the broad spectrum of learning problems and issues, such as attention deficit disorder, dyslexia, transitional concerns, and testing.

- National Association of Elementary School Principals - A detailed site sponsored by the most powerful organization dedicated to the school principal, their career and information needs, and legislation which affects them. Elementary and middle school administrators will find the "Principal Online" feature useful as an idea forum.
- National Association of Secondary School Principals - The home page of the professional organization for secondary school administrators in parochial, private and public school. New features include links to SCRIBE (School and College Records on the Internet for Better Employment) and a common application form for colleges which can be downloaded.
- National Association of State Boards of Education - Principal goals of this organization include strengthening state leadership in educational policy making and working to assure citizen support for public education. Features include profiles of all state boards, links to state agencies, a legislative update covering both federal and state activity, and a summary of ongoing projects.
- National Board for Professional Teaching Standards - With the goal to "improve learning by strengthening teaching," this organization (run by a board, many of whose members are classroom teachers) aims to develop rigorous standards for what teachers should know and set up a national voluntary assessment system to certify professionals who meet these standards. The Board was formed out of a recommendation in the 1986 Carnegie Corporation report A Nation Prepared: Teachers for the 21st Century.
- National Center to Improve Practice in Special Education through Technology, Media and Materials - The Center's chief program objective is "to promote the effective use of technology to enhance educational outcomes for students with sensory, cognitive, physical, and social/emotional disabilities." Distinctive site features include a forum on voice recognition technology, video reviews covering assistive and instructional technologies, and an online library of technology and special education.
- National Down Syndrome Society - Established in 1979 to promote scientific research, assist families and increase public knowledge of Down Syndrome. The "Information" section of this page divides the data into general material, clinical, and educational summaries.

- National Federation of the Blind - The largest American organization of blind persons, founded in 1940. Its goals are to help the blind achieve self-confidence and to serve as a vehicle for collective self-expression by the blind community. This page profiles numerous publications and services offered by the Federation, notably the International Braille and Technology Center.
- National Organization on Disability - This organization promotes the equal participation of America's 54 million men, women and children with disabilities in aspects of life.
- National Parent Teacher Association - Instruction and curriculum materials will be located easily on the PTA page under "Program Areas," specifically the "Arts for Education." Web links to local PTA chapters (including state level) and pages of interest to child advocates are provided.
- National Rehabilitation Information Center - The Center collects and disseminates the results of federally funded research on disability and rehabilitation, offering 60,000 records in five databases covering current research, historical literature, and projects of the National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research.
- National Service Learning Clearinghouse - Part of the ERIC system, this clearinghouse is run by 14 universities and partner organizations whose goal is to assist K-12 Learn and Serve American funded programs and other agencies to expand service-learning opportunities for all youth. The site offers a listing of all such programs currently running.
- Network of Regional Technology in Education Consortia (R*TEC)
- Recording for the Blind and Dyslexic - A national nonprofit organization, this site is a comprehensive source of material and equipment designed to support the education and professional goals of individuals unable to read standard printed text.
- The Listen Up Web - A resource to parents, teachers, and speech pathologists, this site contains a comprehensive series of links for auditory, speech, language, deaf, and vestibular disorders.
- The National Autistic Society - This British organization, founded in 1962 to educate the public on autism and provide specialist services for this population, works with fifty affiliated local societies through its branches. The site offers updates on recent measures being considered by Parliament, a file of news releases, a review of autistic spectrum disorders, separate sections of information for families (parents, siblings, and caregivers) and professionals involved in direct care. None of the publications and resources listed by the Society are available in electronic form.

- Tourette Syndrome Association, Inc. - The only national organization in the United States dedicated to providing current information on Tourette syndrome, based at Massachusetts General Hospital's Department of Neurology. - U.S. Department of Education Office of Educational Technology (OET)
- United Cerebral Palsy Association - The second largest health charity in the United States, its goal is to advance the full citizenship of people with cerebral palsy. Specific useful sections include state and federal initiatives, advocacy, and reviews of ongoing research.
- United States Distance Learning Association - A non-profit organization founded in 1987 to provide the development and application of distance learning for educational training at all levels (K-12), as well as in higher education, corporate, governmental and military environments.
Associations and Societies
- American Federation of Teachers - This professional union has, as members, teachers in public and private schools, paraprofessionals and school-related personnel, higher education faculty, nurses and health professionals, and government employees at the state and local levels. Notable features of this page are links to regular news and information for all its professional divisions, the weekly on-line newsletter, Inside AFT, and access to the research, information technology, educational issues and international affairs departments.
- Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development - Based in Alexandria, Virginia, this international organization provides professional development in curriculum and instruction and supports and designs activities to promote educational equity. Links under "Publications" offer book reviews from Educational Leaderships beginning with March, 1997, a searchable file of the ASCD Education Bulletin for 1997/98. - National Council for the Social Studies - The largest association in the U.S., founded in 1921, dedicated solely to social studies education. It serves as an umbrella organization for teachers of history, geography, economics, political science, anthropology, sociology, psychology and law-related fields at all levels.
- National Council of Teachers of English - The world's largest subject field of the educational association, devoted to improving the teaching of English and the language arts at all levels of education. "Teaching Ideas and Topics" will be an excellent place to begin curriculum and lesson planning.
- National Council of Teachers of Mathematics - The largest non-profit professional association of mathematics education in the world. The full-text of Curriculum and Evaluation Standards for School Mathematics (1989) is available here, as are links to the Standards 2000 Project, the Mathematics Educator Trust, and external sites on mathematics education.

- National Middle School Association - Established in 1973, this is the only national educational association focused on the developmental needs of adolescents, 10 to 15 years of age. The "Resource Center" offers a listing of research summaries on a number of current issues.

- National Science Teachers Association - The largest organization (founded in 1944) providing innovation in science education, with a broad-based membership of working scientists as well as teachers. - Phi Delta Kappa International - An international body whose mission is "to promote quality education (with a particular emphasis on public supported education) as essential to the development and maintenance of a democratic way of life." Working teachers will find the reports posted to the homepage and the headings "Effective Schools" and "Curriculum Audit" good beginnings for further research.

- Committee on Education and Labor - This committee of the House of Representatives was established on January 7, 1997, the latest incarnation of a body first created in 1867. Users will find the sections covering "hot topics" and "status of legislation" most helpful.

- Illinois State Board of Education - A diverse page tracking the activity of the Board and offering a series of links in ten topical areas ranging from communication and accountability through policy planning and management. Service offered by the regional offices are among the profiles offered.

- U.S. Access Board: Accessibility for People with Disabilities - Independent federal agency whose primary mission is accessibility for people with disabilities.
- U.S. Department of Education - This site is the main site for accessing the full range of United States government activity in all fields of education. Readers will find the "Most Requested Items" section useful for tracking information on financial aid, federal school codes, community learning centers, and several types of educational technology. "Education Headlines" is a valuable tool for monitoring discussions of learning-related issues in the public press and within the government.

- Math Forum - Funded by the National Science Foundation, this site describes itself as an "online math education community center." - Microsoft Accessibility Site - This comprehensive site offers coverage under the headings Accessibility; News and Events, Products and Aids, Training, and Developing Technology.
