APPENDIX I: BACKGROUND TO THE PLAN
Cooperative Purchasing. In support of its goal to introduce full-text electronic resources into Illinois libraries, the CCMP completed the group purchase of two CD-ROM titles: Database of African-American Poetry, 1760-1900 and Editions and Adaptations of Shakespeare, published by Chadwyck-Healey, Inc. The Committee also provided seed money for access to Project Muse, a collection of online journals published by Johns Hopkins University Press, and available online via the Internet's World Wide Web. More recently, the Program arranged for consortial pricing for access to Britannica Online, the web-based version of the Encyclopaedia Britannica. The ultimate purpose of these projects is to enrich the electronic resources available to library users in the State of Illinois through a collaborative approach.
Illinois Curriculum Materials Center Home Page. The Committee funded the Illinois Curriculum Materials Center Home Page Project, which aims to share curriculum resources in the state of Illinois by taking advantage of the possibilities offered by the Internet and the World Wide Web. Headquartered at the University of Illinois at Chicago, this home page brings together in one location easily accessible educational information, including (1) personnel of schools and school systems; (2) public documents published by the Illinois State Board of Education, local or regional boards; (3) certification and accreditation requirements; (4) educational standards, statistics and directories; and (5) library curriculum resources and collections throughout the state.
Model Discipline(s). This project identifies one or more disciplines on which to pilot a collaborative approach, including such aspects as primary collecting responsibilities. The project focuses on building research strength in areas that are principally represented by instructional collections in the libraries. It is in this context, instead of throughout the participating libraries, that a mapping process such as the WLN Conspectus is likely to be used. The disciplines of Education and the Biosciences have already been funded as pilot Model Discipline areas.
We the representatives of the ____________________ Library and its parent body, accept membership in the Cooperative Collection Management Program, along with the privileges, benefits and obligations of membership.
We endorse the primary purpose of the consortium, which is to strengthen the library collections resources available to the users of our library and of the other consortium libraries, as well as to the citizens of the State of Illinois.
By signing this document, we commit to being an active participant in the consortium through assistance with planning and prompt response to calls for input into the development of consortial projects. We also commit to abiding by the provisions of written agreements that we enter into within the consortium.
We understand that in return for the benefits of consortial membership, we may be asked to contribute local funds to support projects of mutual benefit and we agree to make every reasonable effort to respond positively to such requests. We further understand that we shall be able to comment on all projects for which assessments are requested. Should it be necessary for our library to suspend membership in the consortium, we will provide written notice at least a year in advance of suspension so that commitments made by us as part of consortial agreements can be maintained and transferred in an orderly fashion.
