All library staff and users of the library should respect the rights of others and refrain from making excessive noise while using the University Libraries. Excessive noise is defined as any noise that is unnecessary and disruptive to others using the library (for example, high volume on personal audio equipment or loud talking).
In some areas of the library, particularly near service desks, a certain amount of conversation is necessary and appropriate.
Groups using the library, such as classes or study groups, should use the group rooms. Since these rooms are not soundproof, groups using them should take care to keep noise at reasonable levels. When groups are using rooms near open seating areas, the doors should be kept closed.
When entering the library, users should turn off cellular phones and pagers or set them to silent operation. In Founders Memorial Library, cellular phone conversations are restricted to the library entrance area (between the revolving doors and the security gates), the student lounge, stairwells, and restrooms. At branch libraries, users should simply leave the library to hold cellular phone conversations.
Anyone who is making excessive noise in the library will be asked to be quiet. Upon continued infraction of this policy, a person may be subject to the following:
