Internet Policy

The Internet (including the World Wide Web) is a global resource and communication system. The NIU University Libraries offers access, assistance, guidance, and instruction in the use of the Internet for teaching and research, our primary mission. In addition, the NIU University Libraries maintain an extensive Web site containing information of major importance to the NIU community, as well as links to electronic resources that support NIU teaching, research, and service activities.

The NIU University Libraries service commitment extends beyond the immediate NIU community. The NIU University Libraries welcome all who may benefit from access to the Internet, and advocates the user's right to privacy and confidentiality. However, it is essential that users be considerate in the employment of shared resources. Although the NIU University Libraries neither filter information available over the Internet nor make guarantees over the quality of information, users must be sensitive to the fact that workstations are in public areas and, therefore, information and images on the screen are subject to view by others. Library users should be aware that electronic transmissions cannot be completely secure or private.

In order to assure equitable access and prevent monopolization of resources, a thirty-minute limit per session will be enforced during period of high demand.

Under no circumstance may a user attempt to circumvent or subvert security measures, or engage in activities harmful to the system or station.

List of activities prohibited on public access workstations:

  • Recreational game playing
  • Internet telephony
