Communicative Disorders Collection Development Policy

I. Academic Programs Served

A. The collection supports teaching and research needs of the Communicative Disorders Department and its special services, such as Speech and Hearing Clinic. There is no specific class or subclass in the Library of Congress (LC) Classification assigned to the interdisciplinary field of communicative disorders. Therefore, faculty and students in the Department of Communicative Disorders have to use the library collections classified in related disciplines such as education, linguistics, medicine, physics, and sociology.

B. The Department of Communicative Disorders offers an undergraduate degree in two areas: Speech-Language Pathology/Audiology and Deafness Rehabilitation and a MA degree with three specializations: Audiology, Rehabilitation Counseling, and Speech-Language Pathology. A new doctorate degree in audiology was just added this year.

II. Clientele Served

A. Interest in the library collections that serve students and faculty in the Department of Communicative Disorders is shared by other departments. Special consideration should be given to the Departments of Special Education, Nursing, Psychology, Speech Communication, and to the School of Allied Health Professions.

III. General Collection Policy Consideration

A. Languages

English is the primary language of publications in the field of Communicative Disorders. Foreign language materials are included only if translated into English.

B. Chronological emphasis

The primary emphasis is on current works especially in relation to contemporary thought and practice in counseling, speech pathology, language development, and audiology. Retrospective purchasing of materials pertinent to the field might occur with emphasis placed on developments within the last ten years.

C. Geographical limitations and priorities

United States, Canada, and Europe are of primary interest. Materials on non-western theories and approaches will be acquired very selectively.

D. Formats

Collecting will be mainly in the form of books and periodicals. In addition, tests and test manuals will be acquired when needed for coursework or research. In communicative disorders, textbooks are of imminent importance and will be purchased occasionally. Electronic formats will be provided when the advantages of electronic format over print justify the expense and for when substantial cost savings can be gained by changing the formats.

E. Publication dates of material collected

Preference in acquiring will be given to current materials and, retrospectively, to those which have been published within the last ten years. When non-current materials are needed, no preference will be given to original printings over reprints. Microforms will be considered when the original publication or reprint is either unavailable or prohibitively expensive.

IV. Other Resources

Communicative disorders resources not available in NIU Libraries can usually be obtained through the Information Delivery Services Department.

V. Special Remarks/Observations

As already stated above, the materials for this discipline are found in many different locations because of their cross-disciplinary nature. The largest concentration on the third floor in the area of Education (L) and Language/Linguistics (P) and on the forth floor in the Health Sciences ( R ). Some books in sound and acoustics may be found in Faraday Library in the Physics section.
